📝 Why Digitally Sign PDFs? – From Paper to Electronic Efficiency

Digital signatures eliminate the need to print, sign by hand, scan, and re‑upload documents. They save time, reduce paper waste, and are legally accepted in many jurisdictions. Whether you’re signing a contract, self‑attesting a certificate for a job application, or approving an invoice, a digital signature is faster, more secure, and more convenient.

1. Sign Contracts & Agreements Instantly

Freelancers, remote workers, and business owners often need to sign NDAs, service agreements, or partnership contracts. Instead of printing, signing, scanning, and emailing, you can add your digital signature directly to the PDF and return it in minutes. Our tool supports multiple signature methods – draw with mouse/finger, type a cursive name, or upload a photo of your wet signature.

2. Self‑Attest Documents for Applications

Many organizations require self‑attested copies of certificates (e.g., diplomas, transcripts, ID cards). Instead of manually signing each page, you can open the PDF in our tool, add your signature (once or on multiple pages), and save the signed document. This is especially useful for job applications, university admissions, or loan submissions.

3. Approve Invoices & Internal Forms

Team leads, managers, and financial officers often need to approve PDF invoices or internal request forms. A quick digital signature provides a clear audit trail and speeds up workflows. Because our tool works locally, you can sign sensitive internal documents without worrying about data leaks.

📌 How to Sign Your PDF (Step by Step):

  • Select your PDF: Click the indigo button and choose the file you want to sign. The first page appears in the canvas.
  • Create your signature: Choose one of three methods:
    • Draw: Use your mouse or finger to draw your signature on the drawing pad. Click “Add to PDF”.
    • Type: Enter your name; a cursive signature will be generated using the “Dancing Script” font.
    • Upload: Upload a photo of your handwritten signature (PNG/JPG).
  • Position & resize: Once added, the signature appears on the PDF canvas. You can drag it to any location and resize it using the corner handles.
  • Navigate pages: Use “Prev” / “Next” buttons to move between pages. You can add signatures to multiple pages (the tool currently saves only the current page – use the button for each page separately).
  • Save: Click “Save Current Page” to download that page as a signed PDF. For multi‑page documents, repeat the process for each page.

Note: The current version saves one page at a time. To sign all pages of a PDF, you would need to repeat the process for each page. We are working on a full‑document version.

🔒 100% Private – No Server, No Upload

Most online PDF signers require you to upload your document to a remote server, exposing your sensitive content to potential breaches. Free PDF Tools uses PDF.js, Fabric.js, and jsPDF to process everything entirely in your browser. Your PDF and signature never leave your device. No upload, no server logs, no tracking – your documents stay confidential.

⚙️ How the Signing Works Technically

We load your PDF using PDF.js and render the selected page on an HTML5 Canvas powered by Fabric.js. The canvas allows you to add, drag, resize, and rotate signature objects. The signature can be a drawing (captured from a separate drawing canvas), a text object with a cursive font, or an image. When you click “Save Current Page”, we capture the entire canvas (background PDF + signature) and generate a PDF using jsPDF. The result is a signed copy of that page.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions – PDF Signing

Q: Is the digital signature legally binding?
A: The tool produces a visual representation of a signature – the same as if you printed, signed, and scanned. For legal validity, ensure you are authorized to sign the document. Our tool does not add cryptographic certificates, so it’s suitable for internal approvals, self‑attestation, and many business contracts but may not meet advanced legal standards (e.g., eIDAS).

Q: Can I sign multiple pages in one document?
A: The current version saves one page at a time. You can sign each page individually (navigate to the page, add signature, save). For a multi‑page document, you will get separate signed PDF files. You can then merge them using our Merge PDF tool.

Q: Can I remove or edit a signature after adding it?
A: Yes. The signature appears as a selectable object on the canvas. Select it and press the “Delete” button to remove it. You cannot edit the signature content; you would need to delete and re‑add.

Q: Does the tool work on mobile phones?
A: Yes. On touch devices, you can draw with your finger. The interface is responsive, though the canvas may be small on very narrow screens.

Q: Is there a file size limit?
A: No artificial limit – but very large PDFs may be slower to render, depending on your device’s memory.

Q: Is the tool really free and unlimited?
A: Absolutely. Free PDF Tools is completely free. Sign as many PDF pages as you need – no registration, no watermarks, no hidden fees.
